Conference “Biodiversity Conservation: Challenges and Opportunities for the Future” in Rome

On Tuesday, May 19, 2026, the Fondation Prince Albert II de Monaco inaugurated the photographic exhibition “Human–Nature: Fragile Balances” at the Botanical Garden of Rome. The exhibition presents in the Italian capital the winning images from the first five editions of the Foundation’s Environmental Photography Award.

On the occasion of the exhibition’s opening, a conference entitled “Biodiversity Conservation: Challenges and Opportunities for the Future” was held, bringing together institutional representatives, members of the scientific community, and conservation experts to discuss the main current priorities in biodiversity protection.

The event opened with remarks by Marco Colasanti, President of the Fondation Prince Albert II de Monaco – Italy; H.E. Anne Eastwood, Ambassador of the Principality of Monaco to Italy; Eugenio Gaudio, President of Fondazione Roma Sapienza; Fabio Attorre, Director of the Botanical Garden of Rome; and Sergio Pitamitz, wildlife and conservation photographer, contributor to National Geographic, and President of the jury of the Environmental Photography Award.

Following a guided tour of the exhibition led by Sergio Pitamitz, the conference took place at the Orangery of the Botanical Garden, opening with an introduction by Marco Colasanti and speeches by Irene Baldriga, Associate Professor at Sapienza University of Rome; Romain Ciarlet, Vice President and CEO of the Fondation Prince Albert II de Monaco; and Eugenio Gaudio, President of Fondazione Roma Sapienza.

The conference featured discussions among distinguished experts: Piero Genovesi, from the Italian Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA), addressed the return of wolf and bear populations in Italy and the challenge of coexistence; Marco Oliverio, from Sapienza University of Rome, illustrated the most advanced biodiversity census methodologies in support of conservation; Danilo Mollicone, from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), presented an innovative feeder designed to promote reforestation through seed dispersal by birds; while Sergio Pitamitz shared his report on the Northern Bald Ibis, the subject of an article published in the latest issue of National Geographic. The debate was moderated by Fabio Attorre.

“This exhibition stems from the desire to foster a concrete reflection on the relationship between humanity and nature, overcoming ideological divisions and instead promoting a culture of responsibility, protection, and balance. Today more than ever, we have a duty to address these issues with pragmatism, ethical sensitivity, and the ability to transform awareness into real action on the ground,” stated Marco Colasanti, President of the Fondation Prince Albert II de Monaco – Italy.

The Environmental Photography Award was established in 2021 by the Fondation Prince Albert II de Monaco to honor photographers committed to raising awareness about environmental protection and to amplify the impact of their storytelling through a traveling exhibition and a dedicated publication. The award pursues a dual objective: celebrating the extraordinary beauty of our planet while highlighting the environmental challenges we are called upon to face, through five categories: Polar Regions, Forests, Ocean, Humanity versus Nature, and Change Makers.

“Photography has the power to make visible what is too often ignored: the fragility of ecosystems, the beauty of biodiversity, and the urgency of protecting the living world. By presenting the Environmental Photography Award in Rome, within the extraordinary setting of the Botanical Garden, we wish to offer the public not only an artistic experience, but also an invitation to reflection and action. This exhibition embodies the Foundation’s belief that awareness is the first step toward lasting commitment,” added Romain Ciarlet, Vice President and CEO of the Fondation Prince Albert II de Monaco.

An exhibition dedicated to the 2021 edition of the Environmental Photography Award had already been presented in Rome, in Piazza del Campidoglio, reaffirming the Fondation Prince Albert II de Monaco – Italy’s commitment to bringing the Award’s message to new audiences and strengthening civic engagement on environmental issues. Following its presentation at the Botanical Garden of Rome, the exhibition “Human–Nature: Fragile Balances” will continue its traveling journey through several Italian cities in the coming months, beginning with Castel Gandolfo in July.

The event was organized by the Fondation Prince Albert II de Monaco, the Fondation Prince Albert II de Monaco – Italy, and Fondazione Roma Sapienza, under the patronage of the Embassy of the Principality of Monaco in Italy and with the support of Sapienza University of Rome, Sapienza Cultura Museum Hub, Delta Ingegneria, and Fondazione Scudieri.

The 7th edition of the Italia Green Film Festival kicks off

The Italia Green Film Festival, founded in 2018, is an international film competition dedicated to environmental and social issues. Over the years, it has established itself as a prominent platform within the global landscape of “green” and “social” cinema, receiving thousands of submissions from all over the world. The Festival has also been awarded important institutional recognitions, including those from the European Parliament and UNESCO for its “High Cultural and Educational Value.”

The 2026 edition, entitled “Return to Human” will begin on April 18 and conclude on May 25 at Teatro Argentina, where the awards ceremony will take place. Promoted by Earth APS, the Festival confirms its role as an international cultural platform capable of combining art, education, and sustainability. Acoustic Enrichment Can Resurrect The Coral Reef

Along the northern edge of the Great Barrier Reef, divers have described an unsettling silence. Areas once alive with the crackling and movement of marine species have become eerily quiet.

Researchers from the University of Exeter explored whether restoring a reef’s soundscape might help restore the ecosystem itself. Their approach, known as acoustic enrichment, involved placing underwater speakers in areas of degraded coral and broadcasting recordings from nearby healthy reefs. Though it resembled an art installation on the ocean floor, the experiment was grounded in ecological science.

Over several weeks, scientists arranged coral rubble on sandy seabeds near active reefs. Some of these patches were equipped with speakers playing vibrant reef soundscapes, while others remained silent. Divers returned daily to monitor fish populations.

The results were remarkable. The sound-enriched patches attracted roughly twice as many fish as the silent ones. Species diversity increased significantly: herbivores grazed on algae, small scavengers moved among coral fragments, and predatory fish followed. Gradually, elements of a functioning food chain began to reappear.

Over the past decade, climate change has intensified coral bleaching worldwide. Heat stress forces corals to expel the symbiotic algae that provide them with color and nutrients. The result is bleached coral that often dies. As coral declines, fish populations leave, and the reef becomes even quieter, reinforcing a downward spiral.

Acoustic enrichment seeks to interrupt this cycle by attracting fish back long enough for ecological processes to restart. While it is not a complete solution to reef degradation, it demonstrates how behavioural cues can support restoration strategies.

“We have long regretted that the Arctic was not more prominently featured on the international agenda,” the sovereign stated in his speech. “It must be acknowledged that the situation has changed considerably in recent months, although not always in the desired direction. The Arctic represents a crucial issue for humanity: its climate and its resources concern us all, and indigenous communities must be respected, listened to and fully involved in the decisions that affect the future of their territories.”

The Prince’s remarks also echoed the work of the Monaco Polar Symposium, held from 25 to 27 February under the aegis of the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation. “The challenges facing the polar regions are systemic and accelerating, as we all know. Monaco is ready to contribute to this collective effort,” he had stated on that occasion, highlighting the strong thematic links between the Monegasque initiative and the Rome meeting.

Air pollution remains a major health threat in the EU

Air pollution continues to pose a serious threat to public health across the European Union, despite significant improvements in air quality over recent years. A report by the European Environment Agency (EEA) shows that although premature deaths linked to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) fell by 57 per cent between 2005 and 2023, unsafe air pollution levels still caused an estimated 182,000 deaths in 2023.

Around 95 per cent of urban Europeans are exposed to pollution levels above World Health Organisation (WHO) recommendations. PM2.5 particles are particularly dangerous, as they can penetrate deep into the lungs and bloodstream, increasing the risk of asthma, cardiovascular disease, lung cancer and, according to emerging evidence, dementia.

Among EU member states, Italy was the most affected country in 2023, recording 43,083 deaths attributable to high PM2.5 exposure. This corresponds to 100.6 attributable deaths per 100,000 inhabitants and a total of 407,949 years of life lost (YLL)—a stark measure of the years people could have lived had they not died prematurely due to pollution-related diseases.

Uniting for Our Oceans: High-Level Events in Monaco and Nice Spark Global Dialogue.

On June 7 and 8, 2025, a series of high-level events took place in Monaco and Nice, bringing together experts, institutions, and international organizations to address the future of our oceans.

At the Blue Economy & Finance Forum in Monaco, discussions focused on transitioning toward a regenerative marine economy. Key topics included coral restoration, sustainable seaweed farming, and innovative models of ocean finance.

In Nice, the Coalition Ocean Rise convened influential voices at an official dinner hosted by Mayor Christian Estrosi, highlighting the urgency for coordinated and united action to protect marine ecosystems.

Finally, at the Chagall Museum, a WWF event provided a reflective space on accelerating progress toward 30×30 goals — protecting 30% of marine and terrestrial areas by 2030 — and emphasized the shared responsibility in achieving them.

Protecting our oceans is not only a scientific or political challenge; it is a HUMAN ONE. This week served as a strong reminder that collaboration and commitment are truly essential.
