World Environment Day 2026 will draw global attention to the urgency of climate action, against a backdrop of rising temperatures, deteriorating ecosystems, and an increasing frequency of extreme weather events. According to the United Nations, the planet has reached a critical turning point that calls for immediate and coordinated responses.
The theme chosen for the 2026 edition highlights that tackling climate change cannot be limited to reducing emissions alone, but must involve a profound transformation of economic and productive systems, as well as a new balance in the relationship between human activity and the environment. The goal is to build a safer, more sustainable, and more inclusive future.
The Republic of Azerbaijan will host the main World Environment Day event, scheduled to take place on 5 June 2026 in Baku. Alongside the official celebration, hundreds of side initiatives are planned worldwide, including public events, awareness campaigns, and digital activities engaging citizens, institutions, and businesses.
Established by the UN General Assembly in 1972 and celebrated annually since 1973, World Environment Day is today the leading international platform dedicated to promoting environmental protection. Coordinated by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), it involves more than 150 countries each year and serves as a key instrument in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals.
In the lead-up to the June 2026 event, the Princess Camilla of Bourbon Charitable Foundation, under the patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Camilla of Bourbon Two Sicilies, has emphasized the strategic importance of World Environment Day, describing it as fundamental to the future of the planet and humanity. The Foundation has also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives that promote environmental sustainability and climate responsibility.
